Downs veteran Huckabone drives to 2,000th career win

VERNON — Longtime Vernon Downs driver Claude Huckabone Jr. won his 2,000th career race on Friday in the final event on the program, steering the trotter Barn Bella to victory in the $9,000 feature.

The 4-year-old mare turned in a 1:52 mile in the ninth race, winning by six lengths over Buff and driver Joe Nasimo for her first win of the season and 19th of her career.

The racing card also featured a big longshot winner, as Lew’s Big Guy, driven by Michael Miller, paid $226.50 to win. The $2 exacta paid $2,131.

Racing will held on Fourth of July, Wednesday night with a first post at 6:10.

There will be a fireworks display after the program.
