Clinton falls 53-13 to Canastota on gridiron
Andrew Marshall scored on a fumble return for Canastota to open the scoring and the team went on to defeat Clinton, 53-13, at home on Sept. 7 in a Class C South/East matchup.
Clinton’s Aidan Walters caught a 28-yard pass from Tanner Deveans for a touchdown and the extra point gave the Warriors a 7-6 lead.
Canastota scored six touchdowns in a row after that, including a return of the ensuing kickoff after the Clinton touchdown by Raymond Wilsey.
Andy Marshall scored on a 2-yard run then Nick Weber ran it in from 51. Marshall hit Colbey Bixby for a touchdown then Marshall had an 82-yard touchdown run. Greg Olden had an 18-yard touchdown run.
Deveans hit Josh Wilcox for a 15-yard touchdown pass for Clinton’s other score.
Olden closed the scoring with a rushing touchdown.
Clinton plays its first home game against Oxford Academy in a non-league game on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1:30 p.m.
Westmoreland drops road game
Westmoreland lost to Sauquoit Valley, 31-6, on the road in a Class D crossover game on Sept. 7 to drop to 0-2 on the season.
The Indians scored three touchdowns in the first half. Zack Gifford ran it in from 10 yards out with 8:19 left in the first quarter to open the scoring and an extra point made it 7-0.
In the second quarter, Ethan Martin had touchdown runs of 25 and 80. The team missed an extra point and a conversion on those scores, making the score 19-0.
Westmoreland’s David Piersall hit Sean Klopfanstien for a 32-yard touchdown pass. A conversion attempt was no good and the score was 19-6.
Sauquoit Valley ended the scoring with touchdown runs of eight by Gifford and 35 by Martin in the fourth quarter. Neither conversion attempt was successful.
Westmoreland kicks off its home schedule Saturday, Sept. 15 when it entertains Phoenix in a 1 p.m. start.
