Broadhurst elected to NJCAA Board of Regents
Gary Broadhurst, Associate Dean of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation at Mohawk Valley Community College, has been elected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Board of Regents. He will represent Region III (Upper New York State) of the NJCAA.
Broadhurst’s appointment is part of a new governance structure for the NJCAA, which will provide more opportunities for student-athletes at all three divisions and connect all 24 of the NJCAA’s regions.
This new structure will include monthly engagement from the Board of Regents nationwide, providing a national leadership presence while fitting the mold for not-for-profit organizations and institutions.
Leaders from across the NJCAA will have opportunities to engage while obtaining information from their respective region leaders.
During his tenure at MVCC, Broadhurst has helped to develop one of the most comprehensive, diverse, and successful two-year college athletic programs in the country, the college said.
Under his leadership, the MVCC Hawks have captured 20 NJCAA National Championships and 68 regional titles.
Student-athletes have been selected NJCAA All-Americans 447 times, and 160 have been Individual National Champions.
Six have been selected as the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Scholar Athlete of the Year, more than any two-year college in the nation.
Broadhurst is also responsible for the academic department’s faculty and curriculum development for the Physical Education, Recreation & Leisure Services, Sports Medicine, and Coaching Certificate programs. He holds the academic rank of full professor.
Broadhurst is also involved in leadership roles on the regional and national levels. He is the past president and current treasurer of NATYCAA, and he has served as both the Men’s and Women’s Regional Director of Region III of the NJCAA.
He has earned many honors, including the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, the 2015 NATYCAA L. William Miller Award for excellence in athletic administration, and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Athletic Director of the Year award in 2007, 2012, and 2016. Broadhurst began his MVCC career as a technical assistant in 1979.
He was promoted to the faculty ranks in 1988 before his appointment as director of athletics in 1996.
He has also served as head coach of the Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Bowling, Softball, and Golf programs.
