Lowell United Methodist Church holds day of faith and fellowship
On Sunday, Sept. 9, the Lowell
United Methodist Church observed the events of
9/11 with a rededication of
their memory garden out in
front of their church.
This was followed by an ice cream social in the church’s dining room. Over 35 people attended including Ed and Lorelei Shroyer who traveled all the way from Oklahoma. They are originally from Rome, but attend Lowell Methodist events whenever they are in town.
“We were here for Easter,” Lorelei said. “This is where we come to church
whenever we are home.”
The highlight of the event was the performance by Mike Froio.
“The magician is here!” Lay pastor, Wendy Grosjean announced as she threw open the stage curtains.
The younger parishioners Skylar, Jordan, and Sheldon Gilboy were enthralled by the performance. With Sheldon often joining in the act at one point pulling a stuffed rabbit out of the magician’s hat.
Froio’s magic act included a bible whose blank pages, turned to black and white, then to full-color images depicting Bible scenes. Then he demonstrated a trick in which he changed water into wine by pouring it from a decanter into a glass.
But the real hit of the show was when he opened a Bible and while speaking of Moses made real flame burst out of its pages.
“How do you do that?” four-year-old Sheldon asked after several of the tricks, including one where he was transformed into a rabbit himself by sticking his head through a drop-down cloth.
This is the 20th year that Mike Froio has been performing magic for churches and coffeehouses. For him it a way to celebrate his faith and spread the word in a way that sticks in people’s minds.
“People remember visuals better than the spoken word,” He said.
The day’s events were well attended with over 35 people coming out for the day of fun and fellowship.
The Lowell United Methodist Church’s next event will be a fund-raising spaghetti dinner held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. For more information find them on Facebook or call 315-338-5473. The church is located on 5840 Lowell Road, Westmoreland, NY 13490.
