Rep. Claudia L. Tenney, R-22, New Hartford, voted in favor of the Protecting Religiously Affiliated Institutions Act on Monday. Members of the House of Representatives approved the measure by a lopsided margin of 402 to 2.

Tenney is a cosponsor of the bipartisan bill that would increase federal penalties for violent threats made against religious institutions. It would also make violent threats punishable as hate crimes.

“Religious liberty is a founding principle of our nation and expressly granted to all citizens in the United States Constitution,” Tenney said in a statement. “Every American should have the ability to practice their faith without threat or fear of violence.”
