National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday with the sole focus of registering citizens to vote that will be recognized Tuesday, Sept. 25.

This year, Jervis Library joins libraries throughout the Mid-York Library System to observe the day. At Jervis, community volunteers will be on hand from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday to assist people wishing to register to vote or change their party affiliation on their registration, according to an announcement by Jervis Director Lisa Matte.

Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day exists to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote by creating awareness of voter registration opportunities and by reaching voters who may not register otherwise, according to The NVRD website at

“Local libraries are committed to strengthening their communities.  One way they can support this is by helping residents register to exercise their right to vote,” Matte added.

On Tuesday, volunteers and organizations from all over the country — and Oneida, Madison, Herkimer and Lewis counties — will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts.

In addition to Jervis Public Library, the following libraries in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties will participate in the national holiday’s registration efforts:

Barneveld, Bridgeport, Canastota, Cazenovia, Chittenango, Clayville, Clinton, DeRuyter, Dolgeville, Hamilton, Herkimer, Illion, Middleville, New Hartford, New Woodstock, New York Mills, Old Forge, Oneida, Prospect, Sherrill, Utica and Whitesboro.

Anyone who wishes to register to vote should visit their local library on Sept. 25.
