Each Earth Day, the NYS Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails New York host Canal Clean Sweep, a day of spring cleaning on sections of the Canalway Trail, in canalside parks, and in other public areas throughout the Canal corridor.

The Rome Historical Society - Friends of the Fort in partnership with Parks & Trails New York are leading some of the efforts for the Canal Clean Sweep in Rome to help clean a segment of the canal trail. “We are pleased to be spearheading a cleanup on the western part of the canal trail through Rome,” Museum Educator Patrick Reynolds said, “In addition to cleaning the trails, we will also learn a bit about the history of the canals in the area.”

Volunteers will meet on Saturday, April 21 at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame located at 5790 Rome-New London Road. Garbage bags will be provided and volunteers are encouraged to wear gloves.

Participants will get a free T-shirt (while supply lasts) and are asked to pre-register at https://ptny.wufoo.com/forms/zd0xt4i1mvr8f0/ . A link is also available on the Society’s website.
