Get a reusable goodies bag for trick-or-treating

Families sending out trick-or-treaters on Halloween can get free reusable bags from the
Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority at the EcoDrop locations in Rome and Utica through Oct. 21.

The bags can replace store-bought plastic pumpkins and plastic bags for gathering treats.

They’re available during regular business hours at both locations:

• 575 Perimeter Road, Rome, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays; and

• In Utica, 80 Leland Ave. Extension, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday-Friday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

The authority has other suggestions for reducing Halloween waste, such as make decorations from gourds, pumpkins and corn stalks instead of plastic, or from recycled paper; paper bags can be painted white for ghostly effects or made to look like tombstones.

Consider home-made costumes or repurposed clothes from second-hand stores instead of buying new, and composting pumpkins after the big night.
