Gas prices continue to be on the rise, and are at a level last seen during summer 2015, says AAA Northeast.

Monday’s national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.76, up 10 cents from two weeks ago including a five-cent hike in the past week, according to a AAA Western and Central York report.

Locally, the average price in the Rome area of $2.86 per gallon was up seven cents in the past week, said AAA. Two weeks ago, it was at $2.74.

The overall statewide average of $2.89 per gallon also was up seven cents from last week, said AAA. It was at $2.76 two weeks ago.

The statewide average is well above a year ago, when it was $2.54 as reported by AAA.

Among factors in the increase, said AAA, gasoline demand hit a new level this month according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) weekly petroleum report. The 9.86 million b/d (barrels per day) is the highest mid-April weekly estimate on record and is the highest so far this year, AAA noted.

The record-breaking demand measurement is likely the result of more drivers hitting the nation’s roads for spring break and as warmer weather starts to spread across the country, said AAA. High demand combined with declining gas stocks are leading to price spikes at the pump, the organization commented.

“Demand is at record levels for this time of year – more drivers are hitting the roads as warmer weather starts to spread across the country,” said Ed Welsh, AAA Northeast Regional General Manager, “If this trend of high demand and declining supply continues, drivers are likely to see pump prices continue to climb as the country settles into spring.”

The AAA survey for unleaded regular gas prices in the state found a range that included a low of $2.79 per gallon in Genesee County to a high of $3.05 in Rockland County. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area
